Lex-Icon Blog Project Post 44 : Rebecca Dolinsky

The Iynux

“…photograph of the artist's book The Iyunx from The Round Library. Iyunx means desire in Ancient Greek.  The iyunx was a toy that Ancient Greek women used to cast a magic spell on their lovers.  Shaped like a yoyo the women would spin the iyunx to cast the spell that would make the beloved come to them. The text is from Theocrates Idyll II.  The witch Saimantha speaks and says, "Turn Magic Wheel."  In this case, the text is taken from a French translation.  This book was recently shown in Moveable Feast, curated by Erin Lawlor at the Hotel de Sauroy on the rue Charlot, Paris.”—Rebecca Dolinsky
