Lex-Icon Blog Project 49 : Donna Marie de Creeft

Gourd book with Asemic Writing

“As a child, before I learned to read, I used to leaf through an obsolete dictionary for hours..Each section was marked by  shiny black tabs with gold letters, the pages were tissue thin, and embedded within the  incomprehensible text were exquisite engravings. It was like entering a cabinet of wonders. All the books I make are inspired by that early sense-memory. The gourd books, in particular, serve as mnemonic devices sparked by a myriad of ideas and visuals that reference the chaotic order of nature. They are  loosely based on the accordion-fold design, with text in the form of  asemic or illiterate writing. Using a palette and iconography that reflect the natural world, I use basic technology and a “pre-literate” working process. The goal is to cross and re-cross the boundaries between cultures, art and craft, ideas and experience, physical and metaphysical concepts.”-- Donna Maria de Creeft

Lex-Icon Blog Project 48 : David Kelly

Michael Steven Bublé

“Using techniques I would usually save for producing visual art comes Michael Steven Bublé. I wanted it to be read in as many ways as possible but also to be made and presented simplistically. One page of text on papier calque, one page on plain white, scrambled text, backround being as foreground, foreground being as backround. A grande desire for the demise of something, an indolent acknowledgement of the demise.”-- David Kelly

BIO:
David Kelly is a London-based artist currently stamping tickets and analysing ancient Egyptian Gibbon sculptures at the British Museum for money. Often construed as a poet translating ideas only to the visual mediums, occasionally in reverse. Please also see his blog at: http://erkembode.wordpress.com/

The Lost Poem #1

for the Mina Dresden Gallery, San Francisco CA

“It is part of a series in which I develop methods of work where I am able to compose a poem on a piece of art and lose it in the art simultaneously. In this particular piece, I wrote the poem using lettrasets while rotating the art on a spinning wheel. Evidence of the poem can be seen but impossible to read.”—Truong Tran

Decortication: swirl

“I fall in love with words because of their sound. Often my understanding of their meaning is based solely on sound&  completely wrong. In this case, the sound of the word "decortication," which means uncovering the surface, suggested unravelling from a tight coil to me.”—Amanda Earl

BIO:
Amanda Earl's visual poetry will be in the Last Vispo Anthology to be published by Fantagraphics Books in November 2012. Her vispo has also appeared in DrunkenBoat.com's visual poetry issue in 2009, the Bleed 1.0, the new post literate gallery of asemic writing, Tip of the Knife. Lex-Icon Blog Project Post 45 : Deborah Poe

Brodsky

“I toy with bookmaking, mixed media objects, and film because of the different dimensions pieces may take. Pointing to, challenging, undermining, and complicating meaning through bookmaking, mixed media objects, and film compels me. I want to shake up the inherent binary nature of language. Visual manifestations of work on the page allow me to, in the Derridian sense, play. For when the clairvoyant pauses, Lori Anderson Moseman sent me a collection of her poems entitled UTMOST brevity. In those poems were various actions of a clairvoyant, such as “when the clairvoyant pauses.” I wrote a poem that referenced the phrase, as well as a short fiction piece “City of Clairvoyance. Then I conjured this visual séance. The two pieces embodying the gloves were published in Fact-Simile Magazine. Pamela Paulsrud’s Touchstones, also in this photograph, were part of the annual Handmade/Homemade Exhibit (2012).”--  Deborah Poe

BIO:
Deborah Poe is author of the poetry collections Elements (Stockport Flats Press 2010), Our Parenthetical Ontology (CustomWords 2008), and “the last will be stone, too,” as well as a novella in verse, “Hélène” (Furniture Press 2012). She has several chapbooks, including a four-part-edition as part of the Dusie Kollektiv (5). Her poetry is forthcoming or has recently appeared in 1913, Shampoo, Denver Quarterly, The Dictionary Project, Mantis and Bone Bouquet. Her visual work—including video and handmade book objects—will appear or has appeared in University of Arizona Poetry Center’s Poetry Off the Page (Tucson 2012), the Handmade/Homemade Sister Exhibit at Brodsky Gallery (Philadelphia 2012), and ONN/OF “a light festival” (Seattle 2012). Online exhibits of her visual and text work include Yew Journal, PEEP/SHOW, Elective Affinities, and Trickhouse.

Lex-Icon Blog Project Post 44 : Rebecca Dolinsky

The Iynux

“…photograph of the artist's book The Iyunx from The Round Library. Iyunx means desire in Ancient Greek.  The iyunx was a toy that Ancient Greek women used to cast a magic spell on their lovers.  Shaped like a yoyo the women would spin the iyunx to cast the spell that would make the beloved come to them. The text is from Theocrates Idyll II.  The witch Saimantha speaks and says, "Turn Magic Wheel."  In this case, the text is taken from a French translation.  This book was recently shown in Moveable Feast, curated by Erin Lawlor at the Hotel de Sauroy on the rue Charlot, Paris.”—Rebecca Dolinsky

Lex-Icon Blog Project Post 43 : Jean-Jacques Dumont

TOTO
2004
