Lex-Icon Blog Project Post 64: Amanda Deutch

Disco Sister Love Poem to the World

“Language itself can be a visual medium.  Often when writing, I look at individual letters and words as visual structures. When I think about visual poetry, I think about Apollinaire, da Levy and cinema.  I have been taking photographs for nearly as long as I have been writing poetry and recently began fusing the two mediums in a way that works symbiotically. I merge text with my photographs and the two ignite, each form illuminating the other to create something new.”—Amanda Deutch

Amanda Deutch is the author of three chapbooks. Her poetry has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and has been published in Esque, EOAGH, Boog City, Shampoo, Full Metal Poem, 6x6, and many others. She was the 2007 recipient of a Footpaths to Creativity Fellowship in the Azores.  She teaches with the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project, is the Artistic Director of Parachute: the Coney Island Performance Festival and lives in Brooklyn.  This poem, “Disco Sister Love Poem to the World” is part of a triptych in a series of photopoems.
